The D.C. Metro Area Carpenters Union recently announced their support of Ike Leggett for County Executive, citing Ike's commitment to working families in Montgomery County.
Leggett, who has fought for more affordable housing in the County, as well as living wage legislation, noted that "the endorsement from the carpenters union confirms the distinct difference between me and other candidates."
"During my 16 years of service as a councilmember to the people of Montgomery County, I consistently fought for policies that included and benefited people from all income levels. Since that time, some policies have been watered down which has resulted in increased traffic congestion and the lack of affordable housing."
"We need to fine tune and fix these policies to serve the interests of ALL residents of Montgomery County -- not just those with deep pockets," said Leggett.
"We are endorsing Ike because of his demonstrated commitment to work for a county in which working families can enjoy a high quality of life," said Dennis Meyers, Director of the D.C. Metro Area Carpenters Union.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters (MARCC) is an affiliate of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC), one of the largest building trade unions in the United States. Their membership includes 15,000 carpenters, drywallers, floor layers, millwork and cabinet workers, concrete form experts, pile drivers, millwrights, exhibit builders and other working men and women living in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
The list of organizations endorsing Ike Leggett for County Executive has grown to include the Municipal and County Government Employees Organization (MCGEO); the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400; Progressive Maryland; Montgomery College Democrats, Montgomery County Firefighters Association, the local chapter of Sierra Club, and Montgomery County Green Democrats.
In addition, Former County Executives Neal Potter and Sid Kramer have endorsed Ike. Councilmembers Marilyn Praisner, Tom Perez, Phil Andrews and Mike Subin have also endorsed Ike.
